So, I feel awful that she loved it and I didn’t–especially because she enjoyed it for the same reasons that I didnt–mostly the writing.
Tell us how you came up with the idea for Water for Elephants.
SARA GRUEN: I was actually looking through the newspaper and I saw a photograph–a vintage circus photograph–and that was really pretty much it. I took four research trips and got a whole bunch of books and watched documentaries on the depression itself because I didn’t know much about the depression either.
